Abstract

PURPOSE: To economically produce an additive of an amorphous pseudo spherical body with superior characteristics for the use in the casting of iron and steel by granulating the powder comprising essentially SiO2 and CaO and added with a modifier and an aggregate then once melting the same and further quickly cooling the melt.
CONSTITUTION: This is in the form of fine particles of which all the raw materials pass fully a 149μ sieve, comprises 30W50% SiO2 and 30W50% CaO, is added with suitable amounts of flux components such as alkali carbonate and fluoride as a modifying agent and carbonaceous aggregate; and further the mixture is kneaded thoroughly with an aqueous soln. of inorg. and org. binders. The kneaded mixture is granulated by a rolling method of an extrusion method, after which the granules are hot-air-dried and heated to the melting temperature or around with a rotary hiln etc. to soften, thence made to a critical molten state and to a melt of every minimum unit of each particle, after which these are cooled quickly. This yields the amorphous lightweight pseudo spherical bodies of a shape resembling to sphere having pores in the internal structure. The mold additive used at the ingotting and continuous casting of iron and steel is produced by the relatively simple processes.
