Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a modified polyolefin having a high solubility in a solvent and being useful in the production of solution type coating agents, adhesives and paints, by heat-treating a 3C or higher olefin (co)polymer in the presence of an organic peroxide in a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A modified polymer having a limiting viscosity which is below 50% of that of the starting (co)polymer (in case of PP below 30%) and an m.p. which is lower than that of the starting (co)polymer by at least 5C (in case of PP at least 10°C) is obtained by reacting 100pts.wt. of a 3C or higher olefin (co)polymer at a temperature of 100W250°C in the presence of 5W100pts.wt. (in case of PP 10W1,000pts.wt.) of an organic peroxide such as di-t-butyl peroxide or dicumyl peroxide in 100W100,000pts.wt. of a hydrocarbon solvent such as diethylbenzene.
