Abstract

PURPOSE: To selectively adsorb and efficiently recover mercuric chloride contained in low concentrations in waste water after a primary treatment such as sulfide flocculation process by immersing a molecular-oriented film or fine powder of polyether into the liquid containing mercuric chloride.
CONSTITUTION: The molecular-oriented film 1 obtained by rolling a polyether such as polyethylene oxide is fixed to a metallic frame 2. A plurality of such metallic frames 2 are inserted into grooves 4 of a mounting device 3, and then the mounting device 3 is placed in a tank that is filled with a solution of a waste water containing mercuric chloride in an org. solvent and is allowed to stand for about a week. As a result, a crystal comprising CH2CH2O and HgCl2 in a ratio of 4:1 is formed in the film and mercuric chloride can be adsorbed and recovered. As the polyether other than polyethylene oxide are mentioned polyoxacyclobutane and poly-3,3-dimethyloxacyclobutane.
