Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer having remarkably improved autohesive property, and useful as an interlayer of glass plate, by acetalizing polyvinyl alcohol with an aldehyde, and after equilibrium is reached, adding a specific amount of a polyhydric alcohol to the reaction mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Acetalization reaction of polyvinyl alcohol (A) is carried out by (1) adding concentrated hydrochloric acid to an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, and (2) adding an aldehyde (B), e.g. butyraldehyde, to the mixture. When the reaction system comes to nearly equilibrium state, ≥0.5pt.wt., based on 100pts.wt. of the component (A), of a polyhydric alcohol (C), e.g. trimethylene glycol, is added to the reaction mixture. After reacting for 1hr, the resin is neutralized and washed with water to obtain the objective polymer as white powder. The polymer is mixed with a plasticizer, milled with mill rolls, and pressed under heating and compression to obtain an interlayer of glass plate.
