Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain hardened gelatin for a photographic material fit for high-speed development by reacting gelatin with the partial hydrolyzate of a compound having N and O to which 4,6-dichloro-s-triazine groups are bonded at the 2-position in the molecular structure. CONSTITUTION:To dry gelatin is added a soln. prepared by partially hydrolyzing a compound having one or more 4,6-dichloro-s-triazine groups each bonded to N and O at the 2-position and represented by the formula [where each of m and n is a positive integer, X is a simple bonding radical or a (m+n) valent org. residue, and R is H or an org. residue] with an aqueous soln. of an alkali such as NaOH or Na2CO3 so that the amount of the triazine compound is adjusted to 5X10<-7>- 2.5X10<-3>mol per gram of dry gelatin at an arbirary stage in the preparation of a coating soln. for forming a gelatin film. When the soln. is added to silver halide emulsion, it is preferably added after the 2nd ripening. This hardening agent enhances the dissolution resistance of gelatin to an alkali soln. and the film surface strength without deteriorating the photographic characteristics.
