Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the preservation stability of a catalyst by recovering a cobalt and manganese catalyst used in preparing terephthalic acid as a carbonate and adding a small amount of acetic acid to this carbonate.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid is prepared in the pesence of a cobalt and manganese catalyst by using paraxylene as a raw material and acetic acid as a solvent. In this case, after terephthalic acid and acetic acid are removed from a reaction mixture, the recovered catalyst is backed and dissolved in sulfuric acid, thereafter the precipitate crystallized out by neutralization is separated and carbonate ion is added. To a cobalt and manganese catalyst recovered as a carbonate, acetic acid is added in an amount of 0.001pt.wt. or more against one pt.wt. of the carbonate. Thereby, deterioration phenomena of a carbonate of cobalt and manganese are prevented and a catalyst stable for a long period is obtained.
