Abstract

PURPOSE: In the continuous adsorption separation of a mixture of cresol isomers with a zeolite adsorbent, an aliphatic nitrile is used as a desorbing agent having high handleability and high adsorption selectivity between the isomers.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of cresol isomers are separated continuously to the components by adsorption using a zeolite adsorbent and a desorbing agent containing an aliphatic nitrile as an essential component. Any aliphatic nitrile can be used provided that it has different boiling point from the cresols, however, propionitrile, butyronitrile, valeronitrile, etc. are especially preferable. It may be used singly or as a mixture with othr desorbing agent. The preferable adsorbent is a faujasite-type zeolite wherein the cation is mainly potassium. The separation is pref. carried out at room temperature to 250°C under atmospheric pressure to 30kg/cm2 as a liquid phase.
