Abstract

PURPOSE: To dispense with or simplify the lubrication of sliding surfaces and simplify the construction of a supercharger, by supporting one or both ends of a rotor shaft on ceramic-made bearings when using nonoxide ceramic for a rotor to make it light.
CONSTITUTION: To construct a supercharger attached to an automobile internal combustion engine, a rotor 2 is rotatably supported in a casing 1 composed of a turbine-side casing 1A, a compressor-side casing 1B and an intermediate wall 1C which divides these casings 1A, 1B from each other. The rotor 2 comprises of a rotor shaft 3 made of ceramic whose main constituent is Si3N4, a turbine wheel 4 molded and sintered integrally with the rotor shaft and a compressor wheel 5 having a fitting hole 51 in which the rotor shaft 3 is secured. The middle part 30 of the rotor shaft of the rotor 2 is supported on a bearing 6 made of ceramic whose main constituent is SiC or the like. The protruded part 21 of the rotor shaft is supported on a bearing 9 made of the same ceramic and held by a stay 8.
