Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the oloring and decoloring speeds and color forming efficiency at low temperatures by adding one or more kinds of the specific 4 kinds of compounds into the electrolyte of an electrochromic (EC) display device.
CONSTITUTION: One or more kinds of 4 kinds of compounds, N, N-dimethylacetamide, tetramethyl urea, N, N-dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide shown by the formulas IWIV are added to electrode so as to become about 50% thereof in total. The nonbound electron pairs of said compounds strongly attract cation and receive solvation, and the existence of refuge ions stably becomes possible. Hence, the ion pairs that do not become carriers to carry the charge in the electrolyte are dissociated by the additives and this results in increased free ion density, faster response speed and better display grade.
