Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect a flaw in a material at a high accuracy by using a swirl type flaw detector having a cylindrical coil provided therein with a cylindrical conductor which contains nonconductive ferromagnetic elements therein, wherein the cylindrical conductor is rotated via a motor-driven shaft to cause an impedance of the cylindrical coil to be varied.
CONSTITUTION: A cylindrical conductor 2, which has nonconductive ferromagnetic elements 41W43 in cavities 31W33 extended inwardly from the outer surface thereof, is disposed in a cylindrical coil 1. The cylindrical conductor 2 is rotated via a motor-driven shaft 8'. Leaf springs 11 are fastened to a retainer frame 9 at one end of each thereof, and to a stationary part 12 at the other end of the same. A swirl type flaw detector of the above-described structure is pressed against a material 5 to be inspected as the latter is moved. As a result, a flaw detecting operation can be carried out in an excellent manner owing to the leaf springs 11 which allow the flaw detector to react with the vibrations of the material 5 being inspected.
