PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst for the manufacture of dimethyldichlorosilane, having better catalytic activity and better selectivity even at high silicon conversion rate by adding small amounts of tantalum and/or niobium to a silicon-copper-zinc catalyst. CONSTITUTION:As a catalyst for manufacturing dimethyldichlorosilane from a raw material, e.g., siloxane oil, siloxane rubber, etc., a catalyst of the formula Si90CuaTapNbqZnb (Si90 stands for 90pts.wt. metallic silicon, 1<=a<=20, 0.01<= b<=1, 0<=p<=0.5, 0<=q<=0.5, and 0.0001<=p+q<=0.5) is used. The catalyst has better catalytic activity and better selectivity even at high silicon conversion rate.
