Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the rate of polymerization and to produce a uniform smooth membraneous polymer which is particularly suitable as an ion-exange membrane, by radical-polymerizing a haloalkyl-styrene in the presence of an epoxy compound having no polymerizable unsatureted bond.
CONSTITUTION: (i) A haloalkylstyrene such as chloromethylstyrene and, if necessary, (ii) other monomers copolymerizable therewith are polymerized in a usual manner in the presence of (iii) a radical generating agent such as benzoyl peroxide and 0.1W30wt%, based on component (i), and (iv) an epoxy compound contg. no polymerizable unsatureted bond, such as styrene oxide or epoxidized soybean oil. Especially, a membraneous polymer can be obtained by coating a fibrous material with a polymerizable system consisting of components i, ii, iii and iv, and sandwiching the coated fabric between polymer films and subjecting the assemblage to a polymerization by casting.
