Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel lubricating oil composition, capable of stabilizing the viscosity-temperature relationship, having improved detergency and dispersibility, and prepared by adding a graft copolymer of an oxidation degraded ethylene-propylene copolymer with a monomer containing a nitrogen atom to a lubricating oil.
CONSTITUTION: (B) A monomer containing a nitrogen atom, preferably 2-vinylpyridine, is grafted onto (A) a copolymer, which is prepared by the oxidation degradation of an ethylene-propylene copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 25,000W600,000 and a propylene content of 25W50mol% in the presence of a gas containing oxygen, preferably in an inert organic solvent, at 50W230°C, at 50W150°C for 30minW10hr. The amount of the component (B) is preferably 5W 50pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. the component (A). The copolymer (A) preferably has a molecular weight reduced by 10%.
