Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve, in a temperature-resistant cusion for supporting a catalyst carrier of a honeycomb type, the sealing properties of a sealing material and to prevent the deterioration thereof, by arranging inorganic fibers around an outer circumference of a metal meshed cylinder with a part of said fibers threaded the meshes of the cylinder and thereby engaged therewith. CONSTITUTION:A metal mesh cylinder 3 is composed of knitted thin stainless wires, and an inorganic fiber 2 comprising a glass fiber or the like is mounted vertically on the cylinder onto every third array of the meshes of the circumference of the cylinder 3 with parts of the inorganic fiber 2 threaded with a prescribed intervals through the meshes of the metal mesh cylinder 3 to be engaged with the meshes. The metal mesh cylinder 3 having interwoven inorganic fibers is then flattened, and one end thereof is folded to form a sack and the end is further rolled to obtain a scroll 5. Then the scroll 5 is pressed and formed to obtain a temprature-resistant cushion of various shapes. Accordingly, the inorganic fibers 2 may be evenly incorporated within the scroll when rolled. Thus almost all of the inorganic fibers 2 are present in the temperature-resistant cushion, and therefore they cannot be blown away by the exhaust gas, and can retain the sealing effect for a long time.
