Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform a continuous reaction by feeding a gas contg. SO2, H2S and dust in parallel with faces of catalyst structures formed into a specified shape to prevent the catalyst layers from being clogged by the resulting S and the dust.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst component such as alumina is formed into flat platelike, corrugated, honeycomb or cylindrical catalyst structures by extrusion, tableting or other method, and a gas contg. SO2, H2S and dust is fed in parallel with faces of the catalyst structures to convert the SO2 into S by reduction with the H2S. The gas flow is made parallel with the structure faces by a method of regularly arranging the structures in a reactor or combining them in a unit and placing the unit in the reactor.
