Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A codeine 7,8-oxide shown by the formula I (R is H or acyl) and its acyl derivative.
EXAMPLE: Codeine 7,8-oxide.
USE: A drug with action, e.g., painkilling, antitussive, and sedative action, etc.
PROCESS: Codeine 7,8-oxide is reduced with a metallic hydride, preferably sodium boron hydride, etc. under mild conditions to give codeine 7,8-oxide shown by the formula III, which is a compound shown by the formula I wherein R is H. The compound shown by the formula III is acylated to give 6-acylcodeine 7,8-oxide. The compound shown by the formula II, for example, is obtained by oxidizing codeinone with hydrogenperoxide.
