Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a coating slurry for paper making which is suitable for use in a high-speed coater and in which the rheological property of the slurry is improved, by a method wherein the slurry contg. Al(OH)3 and a dispersant is stirred by the rotary movement of rigid balls having a specified diameter.
CONSTITUTION: 0.1W0.3wt% of a dispersant (e.g. an inorg. phosphate) is added to a cake contg. 50W75wt% of Al(OH)3 having an average particle diameter of 0.1W2μ. The mixt. is stirred to obtain a slurry having an apparent viscosity of 300W2,000 centipoises. The slurry and rigid balls (e.g. ceramics; glass) are placed in a container. The slurry is stirred by the rotary movement of the rigid balls to obtain a slurry having a property close to that of Newtonian flow.
EFFECT: The slurry 3 treated as above shows a slow rise in torque with a rise in shear rate as compared with an untreated slurry 1 and a slurry 2 treated by using rigid balls having a diameter of 10mm.
