Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain chlorofluorinated ethanes in high conversion without causing carbonization and polymer formation, by reacting a mixture comprising 1,1,2- trichloroethane as a principal constituent, with HF in the liquid phase in the presence of Cl2 and SbCl5 catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 1,1,2-Trichloroethane or a chlorinated ethane mixture comprising it as a principal constituent, which is a byproduct of vinyl chloride monomer and 1,1,1-trichloroethane, is chlorofluorinated with HF in the production in the liquid phase in the presence of Cl2 and SbCl5 catalyst at 50W80°C and 3.0W80kg/cm2.G to give chlorofluorinated ethenes such as CF3CH2Cl, CF3CHCl and CF2ClCFCl2, which can be separated readily by distillation. CF2ClCFCl2 is used as a cleaning agent or a solvent, and the use of CF3CH2Cl and CF3CHCl2 as a substitute for aerosol is now under investigation.
