Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve soil contaminated with heavy metals and to inhibit effectively the migration of the heavy metals to crops due to absorption, by a method wherein a reducing sugar is mixed with the soil contaminated with heavy metals to insolubilize the heavy metals.
CONSTITUTION: A reducing sugar is mixed with soil contaminated with heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, or Zn to insolubilize the heavy metals. It is thought that as the reducing sugar itself has a reducing property, in the initial stage of the addition the reduction of the soil is promoted by the reducing property of the reducing sugar itself, and in the lattr stage the reduction state of the soil is kept during the decomposition. Thus, the migration of the metals to crops can effectively be inhibited. The effect can remarkably be enhanced by using an alkaline material together with the reducing sugar. This enhancement of the effect is thought to be due to the fact that the reduction action and the insolubilization action of the reducing sugar on the metals are enhanced in the presence of the alkaline material. Further, it is thought that as the heavy metals are co-precipitated with calcium or magnesium, the insolubilization and the inactivation are promoted.
