PURPOSE:To rewrite tape mark blocks with high reliability by forming a longer interblock gap than that in writing data by a write instruction for the tape mark block. CONSTITUTION:In response to a write instruction for a tape mark block 3, a longer interblock gap 2 than that of a write instruction for a data block 1 is generated and the block 3, while recorded 66 on a tape 64, is read out 67. A recording state is then checked and if an error is found, the tape 64 is reversed to set a timer 65 which indicates the intermediate optional position of the longer gap 2. When the timer 65 indicates the set value or when the block 3 in an error state is read out, a longer gap 2 from each recognition position in the advancing direction is formed newly and the block 3 is rewritten.
