Abstract

PURPOSE:To cool rolls without affecting the surface temp. and surface characteristics of an ingot by inserting an endless steel belt wider than the ingot between the roll and the moving ingot and injecting cooling water to the roll and the inside surface of the belt. CONSTITUTION:An endless steel belt 4 wider than the width of an ingot 1 is inserted between the moving ingot 1 and an upper roll 2 and light tension load is applied to the belt 4 by a tension roll 5. The upper roll 2 is driven to drive the belt 4. A spray nozzle 6 is provided on the inner side of the belt 4 to cool the roll 2 and the belt 4. Hence, direct application of the cooling water on the surface of the ingot 1 is obviated and the excess cooling water moves on the inside surface of the belt 4 along the width direction, and is discharged to the outside of the moving route of the ingot 1. Therefore, no adverse influence is given to the surface of the ingot 1. A lower roll 3 is cooled by a spray nozzle 7 without affecting the ingot 1.
