Abstract

PURPOSE: A steroid alcohol is oxidized in a solvent by bringing it into contact with dimethylsulfonium ion to produce the titled compound used as a synthetic intermediate of gestogen and adrenal cortical hormone practically in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A steroid alcohol of formula I (the dotted line between he 1 and 2 positions in the ring A means a single or double bond) is oxidized in a solvent by bringing it into contact with dimethylsulfonium ion which has been prepared in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent to give a steroid aldehyde of formula II. The solvent is preferably a halogenated hydrocarbon such as dichloromethane or chloroform and a cyclic ether such as tetrahydrofurn or dioxane. Their combination also may be employed wherein the ratio of the aromatic hydrocarbon : the halogenated hydrocarbon : the cyclic ether is preferably 1:(1W4):1, much preferably 1.5:(1W2.5):1 by volume.
