Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance accuracy of the detection of height positions by scanning the intermediate position of the two tracks having previously been recorded and formed with an A rotary head, with a B rotary head to form a track, reproducing the reference signals and comparing the respective levels. CONSTITUTION:A and B rotary heads are put in such a height position relation by which they are deviated relatively by one track pitch. The two tracks t1, t3 having previously recorded and formed with the A rotary head are used as tracks on both sides to make the B rotary head scan the intermediate positio of these tracks and records and forms a track t4. In addition, the reference signal fp for detecting height position is recorded in the respective tracks t1, t3 by the A rotary head, and only in the prescribed period, the reference signals fp are reproduced with the B rotary head and their respective levels are compared. The detected error signal corresponding to the the deviation for the prescribed values of the relative height positions of the A and B rotary heads is taken out and is used as the height position detecting signal for the B rotary head. With such constitution, the information on the deviation of the height positions is obtained from the tracks on both sides and therefore it is detected with sufficiently high accuracy.
