Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the ignition lag of a diesel engine, by forming a heat-insulating clearance around a portion or the entire surface of wall surround the swirl chamber formed in cylinder head, so as to improve heat insulating performance and thermal efficiency of the swirl chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A liner 13 defining swirl chamber 12 is inserted and fixed in cylinder head 11 of a diesel engine. The liner 13 is made of a heat-resisting alloy or the like by way of precision casting and it is positioned correctly by fitting the top of injection valve (16) fixing boss 17 formed in cylinder head 11 into an injection valve receiving hole 18 formed in liner 13. Therefore, clearance 15 is formed between cylinder head 11 and liner 13. Further, glow plug 19 is fixed in cylinder head 11 such that its top is projected into swirl chamber 12 from glow plug fixing hole 20 formed in liner 13. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to improve the thermal efficiency of swirl chamber 12 and starting performance of diesel engine and to reduce its ignition lag.
