Abstract
PURPOSE:To recycle steel making slag as road metal and reclaiming material by adding coal ash or acidic soil to molten steel making slag followed by granulation. CONSTITUTION:To molten slag such as molten converter slag produced in steel making and refining is added 2-10% coal ash such as clinker ash or fly ash discharged from a thermoelectric power plant. Acidic soil with high SiO2 content such as red mud is added in place of the ash. They are then kneaded and granulated. Since free CaO in the steel making slag is converted into a stable mineral phase with the coal ash or SiO2 in the acidic soil, the hygroscopic weathering of the slag due to free CaO can be prevented to allow the slag to keep the granular shape. Accordingly, slag, fly ash and red mud requiring a large dumping ground can be recycled effectively as road metal and reclaiming material.
