PURPOSE:To improve the efficient use of the space of a magnetic core by arranging a magnetic core at right angles to the sliding surface of a magnetic tape and by providing a nonlinear photoconduction part. CONSTITUTION:Magnetic head 1 consists of photodetecting element 6, photoconduction part 15, magnetic core 9, etc., and holder 11 on which they are mounted. Magnetic core 9 for high magnetic flux is provided along surface P-P perpendicular to the surface which includes the sliding surface of a magnetic tape and a magnetic gap. At one end side of photoconduction part 15, small window 113 for photodetection is provided in parallel and adjacently to magnetic core 9 and facing to the sliding surface of the magnetic tape. Further, the other end side of photoconduction part 15 is coupled with photodetecting element 6 in a nonlinear form by using a photoconductive material such as a prism and glass fiber. Therefore, there is no need to provide a step to the magnetic core with the space limited unlike a conventional linear path as the photoconduction path.
