Abstract

PURPOSE: The hydrogentation of the titled compound in the presence of a catalyst of palladium with a certain concentration is conducted by stirring the reaction mixture through the reaction mixture circulation process in which the amounts of the reaction mixture fed and the gas taken in by a jet pump are adjusted to constant coditions, thus prohibiting the formation of by-products with the product given in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: When the catalytic hydrogenation of a carboxylic ester of butenediol (abbreviated to unsaturated ester hereinafter) is conducted in liqud phase to produce a carboxylic ester of butanediol, a catalyst containing palladium is used and the concentration of the pallaium metal is adjusted to 1×10-6W1×10-1wt% based on the unsaturated ester. Further, a jet pump is operated under such conditions that the relationship between the amount of the reaction mixture L(m3) and the flow rate of the gas taken in G(m3/hr) becomes in the range of 100≤G/L ≤3,000 to effect stirring according to the reaction mixture circulation. This process can reduces the amount of the catalyst used and enables the production cost to be lowered.
