Abstract

PURPOSE: The dehalogenation of a specific alkali metal salt or ammonium salt of halogen-substituted mandelic acid produces a mandelic acid used as an intermediate of medicines from inexpensive raw materials in high yield with industrial avantage.
CONSTITUTION: The dehalogenation of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of halogen-substituted mandelic acid of formula I (X is halogen; R is H, lower alkyl; M is alkali metal, ammonium ion) gives a mandelic acid of formula II. Especially, this process is most suitably applied to the production of 4-hydroxymandelic acid from sodium 3-chloro-4-hydroxymandelate which is readily obtained from glyoxylic acid and o-chlorophenol. The reaction is effected by catalytically dehydrogenating the substrate in an aqueous medium in the presence of a Pd-catalyst such as Pd-C.
