Abstract

PURPOSE: An organic carboxylic ester of d1-menthol or the like is brought into contact with a microorganism capable of producing esterase such as one in Rhodotorula in a water-containing organic solvent to permit the mass-production of the titled compound, because the reaction rate is increased and isolation is facilitated.
CONSTITUTION: An organic carboxylic ester of d1-menthol or a mixture of organic carboxylic esters of d1-menthol isomers containing the same is brought into contact with a microorganism capable of producing esterase in Rhodotorula, Nocardia, Basillus or Rhizopus or an immobilized enzyme made from the processed product in a water-containing organic solvent. As an immobilization carrier, is used alginic acid, agar or polystyrene. As an organic solvent, is used n-, or i-butane, cyclopentane, toluene or chloroform. This reaction can be conducted in either batchwise or continuous reactor to isolate 1-menthol biochemically.
