PURPOSE:To prevent the decomposition of fiber crystal and prolong life by providing short wavelength light cut filter to one end of a sleeve for shielding external light together with said sleeve to the incident end part of an optical fiber for infrared ray transmission consisting of an ionic crystal of silver halide, etc. CONSTITUTION:A sleeve 6 for shielding external light is bonded by means of Cu, Al, etc. to the leading end part 4a of the layer of an optical fiber 1 for infrared ray transmission consisting of a core 2 of AgCl, a clad 3 of AgBr and covering layer 4, and the lead part 5 of the fiber 1 is protected from external light. A filter 9 consisting of Ge, Se, AsSe glass, CdTe, etc. is provided to the end 6a of the sleeve 6 in order to cut medium and short wavelength components (visible light and ultraviolet rays) out of the light from a light source 8, and a condensing lens 7. In this way, the optical fiber 1 is prevented from being deteriorated by decomposition of silver halide owing to short wavelength light and is made longer in life.
