Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain gynosaponin having the same composition as the saponin of Panax ginseng, and useful as a drug, etc., by hydrolyzing a specific novel saponin with a weak acid, thereby eliminating the saccharide from the substitutent at the 20-position while keeping the substitutent at the 3-position unchanged.
CONSTITUTION: A saponin of formula [R1 is [β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→2)-α-L- rhamopyranosyl(1→6)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl group, etc.; R2 is β-D-glucopyranosyl (1→6)-β-D-glucopyranosyl group, etc.] which is a constituent of "Amacha-zuru" (Gynostemapentaphyllum Makino, a plant belonging to Cucurbitaceae family), is hydrolyzed with a weak acid (e.g. acetic acid) to eliminate the saccharide from the substituent group of the 20-position. The hydrolyzed product is if necessary adsorbed with a polystyrene-based adsorbent resin and silica gel, and eluted. The eluate is evaporated to dryness, and developed and eluted by thin layer chromatography using a solvent to obtain the objective compound.
