Abstract

PURPOSE: To accomplish the rolling work with a large draft percentage, and to improve the efficiency, by detecting the edge crack of the rolled sheet, and by controlling the draft percentage to allowable values.
CONSTITUTION: At an early stage of the rolling work, the edge crack generated in the rolled sheet 5 is detected by the detector 6 whose output signal is then inputted to the signal processor 12 which produces a signal to the roll gap controller 11 while the input signal representing the edge crack is within the allowable range; hereby, the roll gap controller 11 actuates the hydraulic screw down device 8 for adjusting the roll gap so as to effect the allowable maximum draft percentage. If the edge crack of the rolled material 5 exceeds the allowable range, the signal processor 12 converts the input signal representing the unallowed excessive edge crack to a correction signal for the motor's rotational speed; this speed correction signal is inputted to each of motors 9 and 10. Thereby, the ratio between relatively different circumferential speeds of upper and lower work rolls 1, 2 driven respectively by motors 9, 10 is controlled; as this circumferential speed ratio between work rolls 1, 2 comes close to the value for the RD rolling condition, the edge crack of the rolled sheet 5 is improved to the allowable values.
