Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R is H or lower alkyl; X is methyl or halogen; n is 1 or 2).
EXAMPLE: N-(4,α,α-Trimethylbenzyl)-α-ethyl-tert-butylacetamide.
USE: A herbicide for rice plants, various grains, vegetables, fruit gardens, lawns, pastures, tea gardens, mulberry farms, rubber plantations or forest land.
PROCESS: A tert-butylacetic acid derivative of formula II or a reactive derivative thereof is reacted with a dimethylbenzylamine derivative of formula III at an equivalent ratio between the former and the latter of 1:0.4W1:1.5 in a solvent, e.g. benzene, or under solventless conditions to give the compound of formula I. The reaction is carried out at a temperature of the coagulation point of the solvent to the boiling point thereof, preferably 0°C to the boiling point. The amount of the compound expressed by formula I is 10gW1kg, preferably 25W500g, as the active constitutent per 10 ares.
