Abstract

PURPOSE: To dealkylate a ≥2C alkyl group linked to an aromatic nucleus in the presence of hydrogen in the vapor phase selectively and in high conversion, by using a specific crystalline aluminosilicate containing a noble metal, e.g. platinum, as a catalyst under specified conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A ≥2C alkyl group linked to the aromatic nucleus of an alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon is dealkylated in the vapor phase in the presence of hydrogen and a crystalline aluminosilicate, having a silica/alumina molar ratio of 20W200, preferably 30W150, and containing a noble metal selected from platinum, palladium, rhodium and iridium as a hydrogenating-dealkylating catalyst at 250W420°C, preferably 320W410°C, and 100psig or below, preferably 0W90psig, selectively in a high conversion with suppressed side reactions., e.g. disproportionation. Thus, an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, toluene or xylene, having a high industrial value can be obtained.
