Abstract

PURPOSE: After it is calcined at elevated temperaturing higher than a specified one in a reducing atmosphere, a platinum catalyst supported on an alumina carrier is treated with an inorganic acid to extract platinum metals, thus preventing the alumina from being leached and recovering platinum metals in high yield through simple processes.
CONSTITUTION: A platinum catalyst supported on an alumina carrier is calcined by heating over 1,000°C in a reducing gas atmosphere. The calcined catalyst is treated with an inorganic acid to dissolve the catalyst components, which are extracted. Thus, platinum metals are separated and recovered. The process according to the present invention minimizes the leaching of alumina by the inorganic acid and largely increases the recovery yield of platinum metals.
