Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to perform an experiment on a Foucault pendulum in a schoolroom by reducing its scale, by putting the fulcrum of the pendulum in up- down motion by using a prescribed device with a signal which detects when the pendulum is at its lowest point. CONSTITUTION:The accelerating device consists of pendulum device A composed of weight 13, suspending wire 6, etc., position detector B with photosensor 16, and driving device C composed of moving piece 25 moving up and down by electromagnet 24. In this constitution, when weight 13 moves from end 41 of vibration to the lowest point 42, electromagnet 24 is excited with the signal of sensor 16 through delay device 29 to operate moving piece 25, so that weight 13 will ascend up to the other end 43. Then, the signal is ceased and weight 13 moves down to the lowest point 42 and then moves up again to return end 41. Consequently, the up-down motion of the fulcrum supplies equal energy to the pendulum in any direction, so that when the device is manufactured with the fulcrum in completely vertical motion, an experimental device for the rotation of the earth on its axis where the vibration plane varies in direction according to the rotation of the earth on its axis can be obtained.
