Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester economically, by a method wherein in carrying out a solid-phase polycondensation of a polyethylene terephthalate polymer, an inert gas to be passed through the polymn. mixt. is recycled for use, and at the same time the inert gas is used as a purge gas for desorption and regeneration in an adsorption tower.
CONSTITUTION: A particulate polyethylene terephathalate polymer is continuously supplied from a hopper 2 to a solid-phase polycondensation reactor 1, and subjected to a solid-phase polycondensation reaction, and an inert gas is supplied to the lower part of the reactor 1 to remove impurities such as acetaldehyde. The inert gas is purified in an adsorption tower 7 for purification, and recycled for use. Just before the adsorbent of the adsorption tower 7 is saturated with impurities, gas flow is switched. A fresh inert gas is supplied through a conduit 11. The inert gas which bas passed through the reactor 1, is used as a purge gas for desorption and regeneration in the adsorption tower 7, whereby the amount of the inert gas to be used is reduced to the min. amount and the polyester can be obtd. economically.
