Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the durability of the element by using Pt-Rh as a catalyst borne by the sintered body of a metalic oxide such as TiO2 and further by applying Pt-Rh alloy to an electrode so as to compensate the reduction of Rh in the catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The metalic oxide such as, for instance, TiO2 of rutile type baked temporarily at the temperature of 1,200 deg.C is crushed so as for diameters of particles to be arranged in the range of 0.1-2mu, later the particles thus prepared are granulated by adding polyvinyl alcohol thereto, and thereby the diameters of the particles are arranged to be 63-150mu. In this powder of TiO2 are inserted a pair of electrodes 2 formed of the Pt-Rh alloy wherein Rh accounts for 2-20% in the weight ratio, which is subjected to compression molding under the condition and baked for 1-2hr under the temperature of 1,100-1,500 deg.C, whereby the sintered body 1 is obtained. After the sintered body 1 is dipped in a solution in 1l prepared by melting platinum chloride of 100g and rhodium trichloride of 11g in water, it is dried and further baked for 1-2hr under the temperature of 800-1,000 deg.C. The electrodes 2 in a pair are connected to lead wires 14 through the intermediary of a pair of heat-resisting metal wires 5 and metal connectors 13.
