Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform position detection free from erroneous operation by improving an SN ratio while increasing a signal, by obtaining timing pulses by detecting leading and trailing edges of light pulses which correspond to a light and shade pattern alternating a light state and shade state at constant intervals. CONSTITUTION:Slits 2a and dark parts 2b are provided at angles 2theta along the periphery of rotaty disk 1 and the angle 2theta should be twice angle (theta) of a usual pattern. A singal obtained through light source part 6 and photodetection part 7 is converted into rectangular-wave pulse S2 through a waveform shaping circuit. This signal S2 is inputted to monostable pulse circuit 11 and monostable pulse circuit 12 having inverter 13 at its front part to output timing pulse S3, corresponding to the leading and trailing edges of rectangular-wave pulse S2, via OR gate 14. Since the pattern having a period twice that of a usual light-and-shade pattern is used, the SN ratio is improved by increasing the signal level, so that the position detection free from erroneous operation can be performed.
