Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare purified fatty acid resistant to discoloration with time, by reacting an alcohol with CO in the presence of a catalyst such as HF-H2O, separating the catalyst from the reaction mixture, and distilling the crude fatty acid thus obtained after contacting with water.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol is made to react with CO in the presence of a catalyst comprising HF, HF-H2O, or HF-BF3-H2O. The reaction product is separated into an organic phase containing fatty acid and the catalyst phase by hydrolysis or thermal decomposition, and the curde fatty acid is distilled to obtain purified fatty acid. Prior to the distillation, the crude fatty acid is brought into contact with water pref. at 0W100°C for several seconds to 100hr, esp. 1minW2hr. The contact of the crude fatty acid with water can be carried out by using conventional apparatuses such as an agitation mixing tank, a counter current continuous contactor, etc.
