Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve fire resistance and heat resistance of synthetic resin foams, by a method wherein the voids of inorg. porous particles are filled with a high-temperature expandable inorg. material, a powdery expandable inorg. material is deposited on the surfaces of the porous particles which are in a wetted state immediately after the filling, and then the surfaces are coated with a resin.
CONSTITUTION: The pores and voids of inorg. porous particles having a high melting point of not lower than 1,200°C (e.g. perlite or "Shirasu" balloon) are filled with an expandable inorg. material capable of forming an inorg. expanded layer at high temperature (e.g. borax, sodium silicate or sodium hydrogenphosphate) in such a manner that the expandable inorg. material becomes liquid, gellike and finally powdery. In a wetted state of the porous particles immediately after the filling, a powdery expandable inorg. material is deposited partly or wholly on the surfaces of the porous particles. Further, the surfaces are coated with a resin, whereby wetting of the porous particles with a synthetic resin raw material during the production of org. foams is greatly improved, and water resistance and weather resistance of the expandable inorg. material are also greatly improved. By the above treatment, the desired blowing agent for blending with synthetic resins is also produced, said blowing agent improving fire resistance and heat resistance of synthetic resin foams.
