Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for baking coating powder readily and smoothly in high yield, while distilling off by-products, by transesterification of methyl methacrylate with glycidol in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl methacrylate (M) is transesterified with glycidol (G) at a molar ratio of M to G ≥2:1 in the presence of 0.01W5wt% of one or more compounds selected from (A) an inorganic alkali metal compound, e.g. alkali metal cyanide or cyanate, (B) an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate, or sulfide, (C) a lithium halide, and (D) an iodide of Na, K, Rb, or Cs as a catalyst to give the title compound, while distilling off the water, added to the system, and the formed methanol with excess M, to give the title compound. Preferably, one or more types of polymerization inhibitors, e.g. phenol, are added to the system.
