Abstract
PURPOSE:To suppress the vibrations of electrolyte by controlling the amount of the gas evolved in a unit time from unit electrode chambers within the specified range at the time of performing slat water electrolysis by using the filter press type vertical electrolytic cell using ion exchange memranes as diaphragms. CONSTITUTION:In the unit electrode chambers consisting of electrode chambers 1, electrodes 2 and ion exchange membrane 3, the electrolyte containing the maximum amount of gas flows into the vapor-liquid separating header 6 through a vapor-liquid overflow pipe 7 of the smallest sectional area and the separated gas and thin salt water are extracted through gas vent pipe 4 and electrolyte overflow pipe 5 respectively. If at this time the amount of gas evolution is so controlled that the linear speed of the electrolyte flowing in the foregoing vapor-liquid overflow pipe becomes 0.5-30cm/sec, the liquid vibrations occuring in the turbulence of the electrolyte and the gas bubble collapsion in the vapor-liquid separating header are suppressed and the mechanical wear of the ion exchange membrane making contact with the electrode in a swollen state may be prevented.
