Abstract

PURPOSE: Polyester is heat-treated under an inert atmosphere at specific pressure and temperature to reduce the contents of aldehyde and oligomer.
CONSTITUTION: A polyester of more than 0.5 intrnsic viscosity, preferably polyethylene terephthalate with a bulk density of 0.6W0.9g/ml, is heat-treated under an inert gas, preferably nitrogen gas, atmosphere at a ratio of 15W300, preferably 20W200mmHg/hr.kg of the polyester in the temperature range from 180°C to the melting point, preferably from 190° to 240°C to reduce the contents of aldehyde to less than 10ppm and/or of oligomer to less than 0.5wt%. When the polyester is heat- treated, the change in intrinsic viscosity of the polyester is required to satisfy the equation ([η]0 and [η] are the intrinsic viscosities before and after the heat treatment).
