Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to read pictures at a high speed without deteriorating picture quality by selectively alternating two picture read parts which differ in the aperture size of a read picture element, picture-element pitch and the number of picture element.
CONSTITUTION: On sensors I1 and I2, half images AM and MB of one scanning line on an original are formed. On sensor J, the whole image AB of the scanning line on the original is formed. Sensors I1, I2 and J have sensor elements equal in number. To read a picture at a low speed with high picture quality, picture elements on one scanning line are read by sensors I1 and I2 being divided into two. To read it at a high speed, picture elements on one scanning line are read out by sensor J with the (n)-number sensor elements. Next, read information on each picture element is quantized as to white, half tone and black and then picture-processed. Consequently, transmission is done at a double speed in comparison with that by two sensors I1 and I2.
