Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polymer composition having an excellent adhesivity and good melt flowability and film-forming properties, and useful for powder coating, by reacting a crystalline polypropylene with an elastomer such as EPR, polyisobutylene, IIR, etc. in the presence of an organic peroxide, in the molten state.
CONSTITUTION: A polymer composition having a melt viscosity of ≤ 300,000 cps at 230°C is parepared by reacting (A) a polypropylene having a melt index of pref. ≥ 10, or ≥ 20, with (B) ≤ 30% of an elastomer selected from an ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber (EPR), polyisobutylene rubber, and butyl rubber (IIR), in the presence of an organic peroxide, at 170-200°C. The characteristic temperature of the peroxide at which the half life perild becomes 1 minute, pref. falls within the reaction temperature range. The peroxide is, e.g. di-t-butyl peroxide (186°C). The polymer composition can also be prepared by first treating the polypropylene with the organic peroxide in the molten state, and then mixing with the elastomer.
