Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve electromagnetic conversion characteristics such as sensitivity and medhanical strength by eliminating a leaching phenomenon on a magnetic layer surface, by dispersing a derivative of a copolymer of styrene and maleic acid as a dispersant in a magnetic layer made of a binder and dispersed ferromagnetic powder.
CONSTITUTION: To a magnetic coating, 0.5W5wt% of a surfactant of a copolymer derivative of styrene and maleic acid of 2000W20000 in average molecular weight shown by formula [I] is added in comparison with the magnetic powder. As a result, dispersibility of magnetic powder and mechanical strength of the magnetic layer both improve and the leaching-out from the magnetic-layer surface never occurs differing from a low molecular weight dispersant, so that the reliability of run operation, resistance to wear, etc., can be improved.
