Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent occurrence of scarfing defect and undulations on the metal surface after scarfing, by providing a commutator between nozzle and electrode and making uniform the distribution of plasma gas flow rate.
CONSTITUTION: A commutator 9 made of insulating material is provided in the space between a nozzle 4 and a broad width electrode 1. When scarfing, a pilot arc is discharged in the space between the board width electrode 1 and nozzle 4 by means of high frequency generating circuit 17, and a plasma arc is ignited between the broad width electrode 1 and metal body 2 by means of high output DC power supply 16. The plasma gas being supplied is controlled by the commutator so that the flow rate distribution may be uniform, and is injected from the end of the nozzle 4. Thus, while scarfing the surface of metal body 2, a fluid for blow- off is injected from a fluid injection nozzle 18 to blow off the molten metal at the same time. By passing a current to an electromagnet 14 from an AC power supply 15 to create an alternating magnetic field, which causes to move a plasma arc column 19 to move reciprocally or the torch 3 to move, thereby scarfing the surface of the metal body 2 in a broad width.
