Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the quality by reducing the length of unexamined end portion of welded pipes by employing a pipe-end examination step and suitably selecting the lap examination distance.
CONSTITUTION: A flaw detector truck 10 is adapted to run on a column 9, under the control of a controller 13. As the examined steel pipe 4 is transported into the flaw-detection bed 5, a probe 1 is attached to a point a on the pipe 4 and the flaw- detection is started after stabilization of the water film. After each probe 1 has passed thr pipe end 4a, the probe 1 is lifted by a manipulator 2 to complete the step A of examining the pipe end. Then, the probe 1 is placed at a point b which is spaced by a predetermined distance from the point a and the examination B of the central part of the pipe is effected after the stabilization of the water film. A lap flaw-detection region LR is preserved between the points a and b. The length of this region LR is selected to be longer than the distance corresponding to the water-film stabilization times in the steps A and B so that the unexamined portion is eliminated.
