Abstract

PURPOSE:To color the surface of iron base material beautiful and stabilized black, by dipping the base material into a heated soln. made by dissolving sodium thioantimonate in a soln. of sodium hydroxide, to which is further added sodium nitrate and sodium sulfide. CONSTITUTION:Sodium thioantimonate is dissolved in a soln. of sodium hydroxide, then sodium nitrate is added to the soln. as an oxidizing agent, in addn., sodium sulfide is added as an oxidation catalyst. The aq. soln. is heated and is kept at a temp. about 140+ or -10 deg.C, into which is dipped iron or iron alloy for about 1-10min. This treatement produces constantly strong, sleek, coal-black color on the surface of the treated metal.
